Pre-Christmas customer visit: Benjamin Schwegler (right), member of the management board, and Detlef Koslowsky, head of sales, travelled halfway around the world when they visited a long-standing Korean customer in December 2024.
The company manufactures electric winch systems for large container ships, for which we now supply over 200 electric motors every year – and more projects are already being planned.
Type 280 motors (a common size in the winch sector) with an output of 95 kW are required for mooring winches. Up to 14 mooring winches are installed per ship, which are connected in series. We also supply motors for anchor winches (usually two per ship), which are often even larger and have to deliver more power (up to 165 kW). While winch motors under 100 kW do not require approval by a classification body and are therefore preferably designed in this power range, approval is mandatory for anchor winches regardless of the power.
Our “Made in Germany” quality promise is also something we can use to our advantage on the Asian market, primarily in South Korea and Japan. Our Korean contacts value the robust durability of our engines and emphasise this to shipowners and shipping companies. Longevity saves overall costs caused by downtimes and more frequent replacement components.
The “man vs. machine” size comparison on the photo taken at the production site shows the dimensions that finished winch systems for large container freighters can accommodate.
